Anzac Day on the islands MEALS BL
ANZAC Day - Thursday Island
Anzac Day holds profound significance in the Torres Strait Islands, honouring the legacy of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion - Australia’s only all-Indigenous battalion.
Formed in 1943 during the Pacific War, nearly 830 Torres Strait Islander men volunteered to defend their homeland against advancing Japanese forces. In proportion to its population, no other community in Australia made a greater contribution to the nation’s military effort during the Second World War.
Today provides a unique opportunity to experience Anzac Day in the Torres Strait. The day begins with a moving Dawn Service at Green Hill Fort, followed by the traditional ‘Gunners’ Breakfast and the Anzac Parade.
Later, there may even be an opportunity to join a game or two of two-up at the local Bowls Club or watch a game of local football, experiencing the warm community spirit and distinctive traditions of island life.
